Statistics 235

Instructors: Lab Exam Information

1. Organization

The lab exams in Statistics 235 will be held in the week of November 29– December 5, 2012. It will be a one-hour (60 minutes not including the time needed to download the exam data) multiple-choice exam held in the lab rooms during regular lab sessions. Students should be writing the lab exam in their lab sections.

You should pick up the exams in the General Department Office, CAB 632 (file cabinets) one day before the scheduled exam. The copies of the exams for each section are in an envelope with the section number, your name and exam time on it. Make sure that you pick up the envelope for your section. The number of exam copies is slightly higher than the number of students enrolled in your section.

There are two versions of the exam in each lab section. They are distinguished by a different color. The two versions should be distributed in alternate fashion to reduce cheating during the exams. For the same reason, the exam version number is not specified directly in the exam, the version is specified by the number of the data file used in the exam.

2. Administration

Before you start distributing the exams, make sure that only students from your lab section are in the lab room. Each student should get only one copy of the exam. The two versions of the exam should be distributed in alternate fashion. Do not leave any unused exam sheets in the lab room.

  • Before the exam, you should put the signs about the exam on the door outside your lab room.
  • Collect the students’ signatures during the exam. Do not allow any student from other section to write the exam in your section. The signatures should be collected individually. Do not hesitate to ask for ID if you have any doubts whether the student is in your section.
  • You should not provide any assistance in solving the exam problems.
  • During the exam the students are forbidden to use the network for any purpose other than retrieval of the data set for their version of the exam and the required application (Excel or Minitab). They are also forbidden to use floppy disks, zip disks and CD-ROM during the exam.
  • Students are forbidden to use calculators (calculators with infrared capabilities may be used for cheating).
  • \Watch the students during the exam. You are forbidden to do your own work during the exams. There has been a significant increase in the number of incidents of installing chat functions before the exam time in the last few years.

3. Data Files

In each version of the exam the students will be using one data file. The exam data files will be available on the Stat 235 Labs web site and also as a backup on the AICT server (the address will be provided later).
